UEFA Super Cup 2008 was the 33rd UEFA Super Cup, a football match played between the winners of the previous season’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup competitions. The 2008 competition was contested by Manchester United of England, who won the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League, and Zenit Saint Petersburg of Russia, the winners of the 2007–08 UEFA Cup. The match was played on 29 August 2008 at the Stade Louis II in Monaco.
Zenit claimed a 2–1 victory, with Pavel Pogrebnyak scoring just before half-time. And Danny doubling Zenit’s lead near the hour mark. Although Nemanja Vidić pulled a goal back for Manchester United in the 73rd minute, Zenit held on to become the first Russian team to win the UEFA Super Cup. Paul Scholes received a red card for handball in the 90th minute, resulting in his suspension from Manchester United’s opening Champions League defense against Villarreal.
This was Zenit’s first appearance in the competition, whereas Manchester United had participated twice before in 1991 and 1999. Their first outing saw a 1–0 win over Red Star Belgrade. While their latest appearance resulted in a 1–0 defeat to Lazio, the last UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup holder to compete in the Super Cup.
