Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League was suspended in mid-March 2020 and later resumed in August. From the quarter-finals onwards, the tournament format was altered, with matches being played as single-leg knockout ties at neutral venues in Lisbon, Portugal, specifically at the Estádio da Luz and Estádio José Alvalade. These matches were held behind closed doors between 12 and 23 August. The video assistant referee (VAR) system, which had been introduced in the previous season, was used from the play-off round onwards.
Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
The 2019-20 UEFA Champions League’s Round of 16 ties were scheduled to be played over four weeks, with the first legs occurring in February and the second legs in March. The first leg matches proceeded without disruption from the pandemic. However, as the COVID-19 situation worsened in Europe, especially in Spain and France, the home games of Valencia and Paris Saint-Germain were played behind closed doors.
On 15 March, UEFA announced a suspension of the competition, postponing the remaining second leg fixtures indefinitely. A taskforce was established to determine a new schedule for the season. Subsequently, on 23 March, UEFA announced that the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, originally set to host the final on 30 May, would no longer do so. Instead, the 2021 final was planned to be held there, which was later further postponed to 2023.
The tournament resumed on 7 August, with the competition concluding on 23 August. Except for the four unplayed Round of 16 second legs, which were held at their original venues, the remainder of the competition was moved to Portugal. The quarter-finals and beyond were organized as a mini-tournament in Lisbon, featuring single-leg knockout ties. All these matches were played behind closed doors due to the ongoing pandemic across Europe.
