The 2019–20 Premier League season was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to an unprecedented three-month suspension. On 13 March 2020, the Premier League decided to halt the league after several players and club staff fell ill due to the pandemic. Initially, the suspension was set until 4 April but was later extended to mid-June. The season finally recommenced on 17 June with two matches, followed by a full round of fixtures from 19 to 22 June.
Liverpool were crowned champions for the first time since 1990, marking their first title win in the Premier League era and their nineteenth overall. Throughout the season, Liverpool set several English top-flight records, including the earliest title win (with seven games to spare), the latest title win (securing the title on 25 June), the largest points lead at any point (25 points), and the most consecutive home wins (24, with 7 carried over from the previous season).
Additionally, the 2019–20 season introduced the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, alongside changes to laws regarding backpasses, penalties, handballs, and substitutions. These changes had a considerable impact on the dynamics and outcomes of the games.
Premier league 2019-20 summary
The 2019–20 Premier League season introduced several significant changes, including a new three-year television deal that impacted how matches were broadcast. A notable change was that Sky Sports aired eight matches at 19:45 on Saturdays throughout the season. Additionally, Amazon entered the broadcasting landscape by showing two rounds of fixtures in December, including the highly anticipated Merseyside derby. This marked the first time an entire round of live matches was broadcast domestically in the UK, showcasing the growing influence of streaming services in sports broadcasting.
Another first for the Premier League this season was the introduction of a mid-season break in February. This break was structured over two weekends, with three games played on 8–9 February and six games on 14–17 February. The final game of the round, Manchester City versus West Ham United, was originally scheduled for 9 February but was postponed to 19 February due to Storm Ciara. The staggered scheduling ensured that games did not overlap, allowing each match to be viewed in its entirety.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
The 2019–20 Premier League season was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, marking an unprecedented disruption in English football. The situation began to escalate on 10 March 2020, when the match between Manchester City and Arsenal was postponed. This decision followed concerns that Arsenal players had come into close contact with Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis, who had tested positive for COVID-19 after the two teams met in the UEFA Europa League nearly two weeks earlier. This postponement marked the first significant disruption in English football since the 1939–40 season, which was abandoned after only three games due to the outbreak of the Second World War.
On 12 March, it was reported that three Leicester City players were self-isolating, and Manchester City’s defender Benjamin Mendy was also in isolation after a family member showed symptoms of the virus. The situation escalated further that evening when Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta tested positive for COVID-19, leading to the postponement of Arsenal’s upcoming match against Brighton & Hove Albion, which was scheduled for 14 March. The following day, Chelsea announced that their winger Callum Hudson-Odoi had also tested positive for the virus.
These developments led to the Premier League’s decision to suspend the season on 13 March 2020, as the severity of the pandemic became clear. The suspension was initially set until 4 April but was later extended, leading to a halt in football activities for over three months.
