La Liga 2019–20 was the 89th since its establishment. Barcelona entered the season as the two-time defending champions, having claimed their 26th title the previous year. Osasuna, Granada, and Mallorca were the newly promoted teams from the 2018–19 Segunda División, replacing Rayo Vallecano, Huesca, and Girona, who were relegated to the 2019–20 Segunda División.
On 12 March 2020, both La Liga and the Segunda División were initially suspended for at least two weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The suspension was extended indefinitely on 23 March. The season resumed on 11 June, with matches played daily until 13 July. The penultimate round of games took place on 16 July, and the final round was held on 19 July.
On 16 July, Real Madrid secured their record-extending 34th league title with one match remaining, following a victory against Villarreal.

As a result, Villarreal and Real Sociedad, who finished fifth and sixth in the 2019–20 La Liga, qualified for the 2020–21 UEFA Europa League group stage. Granada, which finished seventh, entered the competition at the second qualifying round.
