UEFA Super Cup 2001 Champions, final match and achievements

UEFA Super Cup 2001 was the 26th UEFA Super Cup, the annual UEFA Super Cup contested between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup . Bayern were appearing in the Super Cup for the third time, their two previous appearances in 1975 and 1976 had ended in defeat. Liverpool were appearing in their fourth Super Cup, they won the competition in 1977 , and lost twice in 1978 and 1984.
In the 2001 UEFA Super Cup, held at Stade Louis II in Monaco, Liverpool faced Bayern Munich after both teams had won major European titles. Bayern had secured the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League by defeating Valencia in a penalty shoot-out after a 1–1 draw, while Liverpool won the 2000–01 UEFA Cup in a thrilling 5–4 match against Alavés.
Liverpool opened the scoring in the first half with a goal by John Arne Riise, followed by Emile Heskey’s strike to make it 2–0 by halftime. Just after the break, Michael Owen scored, extending Liverpool’s lead to 3–0. Although Bayern fought back with goals from Hasan Salihamidžić and Carsten Jancker, Liverpool held on to win 3–2, marking their second UEFA Super Cup title. The match was attended by 13,824 fans.
