UEFA Champions League 2024-25 was the 70th season of Europe’s premier club football tournament and introduces a significant format change. Departing from the traditional group stage, the competition now features a single league phase comprising 36 teams. Each team plays eight matches against different opponents, leading to a comprehensive league table.
Paris Saint-Germain captured their first-ever UEFA Champions League title with a stunning 5–0 victory over Inter Milan in the final, held at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. The emphatic win set a record for the largest margin of victory in a Champions League final. As champions, PSG secured automatic qualification for the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League league phase, a spot in the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup finals, and a place in the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup group stage. They also earned the right to face 2024–25 UEFA Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup. This triumph marked a historic milestone for French football, as PSG became the first French club to lift the trophy since Olympique Marseille’s victory in the 1992–93 edition.

Knockout phase play-offs
In the knockout phase, teams compete in two-legged ties on a home-and-away basis, except for the final, which is a single match. The bracket structure is partially predetermined through seeding, with teams’ placements based on their final standings from the league phase. There is no country protection, meaning teams from the same association can face each other in any round. Additionally, teams may be drawn against opponents they previously faced during the league phase.
The draw mechanism for each round of the knockout phase is structured as follows:
Round of 16: The top eight teams from the league phase (positions 1–8) are seeded, and the eight winners from the knockout phase play-offs are unseeded. Similar to the play-offs, the draw is split into four sections based on the fixed bracket, pairing each seeded team with one of two possible unseeded teams. Seeded teams host the second leg.
Quarter-finals and Semi-finals: Match pairings are fixed according to the tournament bracket. A draw is held solely to decide which team will play the first leg at home. Additionally, for administrative purposes, a draw is conducted to determine which semi-final winner will be designated as the “home” team in the final, even though it is played at a neutral venue.
Knockout Phase Play-offs
The eight teams that finished 9th–16th in the league phase are seeded, while those ranked 17th–24th are unseeded. The draw is divided into four sections based on the predetermined bracket, with each seeded team drawn against one of two possible unseeded opponents. Seeded teams will host the second leg.
