Supercopa de España 2020 was 36th edition of the tournament, corresponding to the 2019-20 season. It was played outside Spanish territory, at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium , in the city of Jeddah , Saudi Arabia.
This edition marked the first time more than two teams participated, introducing semi-finals and a final format. With both the league champions and cup winners being eliminated in the semi-finals, it was also the first time that neither of the previous season’s champions competed in the title decider. Consequently, this was the fourth instance where a team won the Super Cup without having won either the League or Copa del Rey in the previous season, following FC Barcelona in 1996, RCD Mallorca in 1998, and Athletic Club in 2015. Additionally, it was the first edition to be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

The tournament was initially intended to feature the winners and runners-up of the 2018–19 Copa del Rey and 2018–19 La Liga. However, since Barcelona won La Liga and were also the runners-up in the Copa del Rey, the extra spot was allocated to the third-placed team in La Liga, Real Madrid.

Format change
A new format for the Spanish Super Cup was introduced, featuring the participation of four teams, reminiscent of the 1941-1947 Copa Presidente. This edition was also notable for being played outside of Spain. The top two teams from the 2018-19 League and the two finalists of the 2018-19 Copa del Rey competed in a semi-final and final format, spread over three games. If a team qualified through both the League and the Copa del Rey, the next best-ranked team in the League, that did not reach the Copa del Rey final, would qualify for the Super Cup. With these changes, the tournament was held in January 2020.
