La Liga 2020–21 was the 90th since its establishment. The season began on 12 September 2020 and concluded on 23 May 2021. The fixtures were announced on 31 August 2020. Real Madrid entered the season as the defending champions, having secured their 34th title in the previous campaign. Huesca, Cádiz, and Elche were promoted from the 2019–20 Segunda División, replacing Espanyol, Mallorca, and Leganés, who were relegated to the 2020–21 Segunda División.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rule allowing five substitutions per team, introduced in May 2020, was exceptionally continued this season, with a maximum of three substitution rounds per match.
Atlético Madrid won their eleventh La Liga title on the final day of the season with a 2–1 comeback victory over Valladolid. This was their first championship since the 2013–14 season. Since then, only Barcelona and Real Madrid had claimed the title.
