FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Champions, matches and awards

FIFA Club World Cup 2025 was the 21st edition of the competition and the first under its newly expanded 32-team format. Organized by FIFA, the tournament is taking place in the United States from June 14 to July 13, 2025. This expansion follows FIFA’s plan to elevate the tournament’s prestige and global reach by incorporating a broader representation of top clubs from around the world. Previously contested by just seven teams, the six continental champions and the host nation—the new format sees participation increase significantly. Under the new structure, clubs that won their respective continental competitions between 2021 and 2024 have qualified, with five of FIFA’s six confederations each sending four champions. For Oceania (OFC), which typically lacks a high volume of elite-level competition, the highest-ranked club across the 2021–2024 period has been selected. The remaining slots are filled based on FIFA’s four-year club ranking system, allowing additional high-performing clubs to join the competition.
Manchester City, winners of the final edition under the old format in 2023, enters this edition as the defending champion. The 2025 tournament is expected to serve as a major showcase event for global club football and a critical test run for the United States ahead of co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Background and format
Since its return from hiatus in 2005, the FIFA Club World Cup had been held annually in December and featured a limited pool of participants—primarily the winners of each continental club competition. However, starting in late 2016, FIFA president Gianni Infantino began pushing for an expanded and restructured tournament. He initially proposed a 32-team format beginning in 2019, aiming to move the competition to June or July to increase its appeal to broadcasters and commercial partners. By late 2017, discussions within FIFA had evolved into a more concrete proposal: a 24-team Club World Cup to be held every four years starting in 2021, taking the place of the now-defunct FIFA Confederations Cup. This expanded format and the shift in scheduling were officially confirmed at the FIFA Council meeting in Miami in March 2019. China was chosen as the host for the inaugural expanded edition, but the 2021 tournament was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
FIFA eventually announced on June 23, 2023, that the United States would host the first expanded edition of the Club World Cup in 2025, serving as a key lead-in to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will also be hosted in the U.S., along with Canada and Mexico. The revamped format features 32 teams, divided into eight groups of four. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, mirroring the format used in the FIFA World Cup from 1998 through 2022 except there will be no third-place playoff in this tournament.
In January 2024, it was reported that the majority of matches would be played on the U.S. East Coast. This decision was made to accommodate European broadcasters and audiences, given the high concentration of participating clubs from Europe, and to minimize scheduling conflicts with the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which is also set to take place in the U.S. but will primarily be staged in the western part of the country.
