FIFA Club World Cup 2006 Champions, matches and achievements

Club World Cup 2006 was the 3rd edition of FIFA Club World Cup, a tournament organized by FIFA for the winners of each confederation’s top continental club tournament. The 2006 FIFA Club World Cup featured the champions from each of the six confederations in a knockout-style tournament. A draw determined the quarter-final match-ups among the champions of AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, and OFC, while the UEFA and CONMEBOL champions received byes to the semi-finals. Teams losing in the quarter-finals played for fifth place, and those defeated in the semi-finals competed in a third-place play-off.
Defending champions São Paulo were unable to qualify, as they were defeated by fellow Brazilian club Internacional in the 2006 Copa Libertadores Final. Internacional went on to win their first Club World Cup title, defeating Al Ahly in the semi-finals and then beating Barcelona 1–0 in the final.
A host nation team was initially proposed but ultimately did not participate. With Australia’s exit from the OFC, the Oceanian representative, Auckland City, was fully amateur, so there was consideration of a play-off between Auckland City and Japan’s J. League champions (Gamba Osaka) to increase local interest. This would have also removed the fifth-place match to keep the number of games the same, but the idea was later rejected. However, the tournament format was revised the following year in 2007.
