Club World Cup 2009 was the 6th edition of FIFA Club World Cup and was played in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Defending champions Manchester United did not qualify for the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup, having lost the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final to Barcelona. Barcelona went on to win the Club World Cup for the first time. After coming from behind to defeat Mexican club Atlante 3–1 in the semi-finals, Barcelona staged another comeback in the final against South American champions Estudiantes. Mauro Boselli gave Estudiantes the lead in the 37th minute, but Pedro equalized for Barcelona with just a minute remaining in regular time. In extra time, Lionel Messi scored the decisive goal five minutes into the second half, securing a 2–1 victory.
This triumph made Barcelona the first Spanish club to win the FIFA Club World Cup. Additionally, it capped off a remarkable year for the team, as they won six competitions in 2009, surpassing Liverpool’s previous European record of five trophies in a calendar year, set in 2001.
