Manchester City nearly took the lead in the 8th minute when Nathan Aké’s header was saved by Sevilla’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou. Jack Grealish also had a shot saved by Bounou in the 17th minute. However, it was Sevilla who struck first in the 25th minute, with Youssef En-Nesyri heading in a cross from Marcos Acuña to give Sevilla a 1–0 lead.
In the second half, En-Nesyri had another chance to extend Sevilla’s lead after being set up by Lucas Ocampos, but his effort was saved by City’s goalkeeper, Ederson. Manchester City equalized in the 63rd minute when Cole Palmer headed in a cross from Rodri.
Despite more chances, including another save by Bounou from a Palmer effort and a header from Aké that was tipped over, the match ended 1–1 after 90 minutes, leading to a penalty shootout.
