UEFA Super Cup 2021 Summary
In the 2021 UEFA Super Cup, Chelsea took the lead in the 27th minute when Kai Havertz delivered a low cross from the left, which Hakim Ziyech converted from seven yards out. Unfortunately, Ziyech had to be substituted just before half-time due to a shoulder injury. Villarreal nearly equalized in first-half injury time when Alberto Moreno’s volley struck the underside of the crossbar.
Villarreal eventually equalized in the 73rd minute when Gerard Moreno finished clinically into the top left corner of the net after Boulaye Dia flicked the ball back to him from the right side of the penalty area. The match proceeded to extra time, where Chelsea made a strategic substitution in the final minute, bringing on Kepa Arrizabalaga for Édouard Mendy.
