UEFA Super Cup 2006 Summary
For the third time, the UEFA Super Cup featured two clubs from the same country, with Barcelona and Sevilla joining past all-Italian matchups from 1990 and 1993. Barcelona earned their sixth appearance in the Super Cup after winning the 2005–06 UEFA Champions League. Where they defeated Arsenal 2–1 in Paris. Their first three appearances as UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup champions in 1979, 1982, and 1989—all ended in defeat. However, they finally secured the Super Cup in 1992 after winning their first European Cup and beating Werder Bremen 3–2 on aggregate. They claimed a second title five years later, overcoming Borussia Dortmund as the 1997 Cup Winners’ Cup holders.
Sevilla, meanwhile, made their Super Cup debut after capturing the 2005–06 UEFA Cup with a 4–0 victory over Middlesbrough in Eindhoven. This win came in their sixth UEFA Cup campaign. Following earlier appearances in 1982–83, 1983–84, 1990–91, 1995–96, and 2004–05. Before the 2006 Super Cup, Barcelona and Sevilla had met in European competition only once—in the 1995–96 UEFA Cup’s third round, where Barcelona advanced with a 4–2 aggregate victory.
