Supercopa de España History
The Supercopa de España, or the Spanish Super Cup, is an annual football competition in Spain contested by the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey from the previous season. The format has changed over the years, but traditionally, it was a two-legged tie played at the beginning of the season, usually in August, between the two aforementioned teams.
The history of the Supercopa de España dates back to 1982 when it was first established. The inaugural edition was won by Real Sociedad. Since then, it has been contested every year except in 1986, when it was not held due to scheduling conflicts.

Originally, the Supercopa was a two-legged affair, with each team hosting one leg. In 1995, it switched to a single match format, often played at a neutral venue. However, in 2019, the competition reverted to a two-legged format.
Real Madrid holds the record for the most Supercopa de España titles, followed closely by Barcelona. Both clubs have dominated Spanish football for decades, so it’s no surprise they’ve had a stronghold on this trophy.
The Supercopa de España is not just a prestigious trophy but also serves as a curtain-raiser for the Spanish football season, generating excitement among fans and providing an early indication of each team’s form.
