It started with the first round on August 7, 2008, and concluded on May 30, 2009, with Werder Bremen defeating Bayer Leverkusen in the final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion. Bayer Leverkusen had eliminated defending champions Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. As winners, Werder Bremen earned a place in the fourth qualifying round of the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League.
